Permit summary

The type of authority needed to conduct filming and/or photography on Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) managed areas varies depending on the scale and nature of the activity.

  • For filming or photography involving less than 11 people and no prescribed structures (such as aerial drones over 2kgs, towers and generators), no authority is generally required. However, a notification must still be submitted to QPWS.
  • If the filming or photography involves 11 or more people and/or the use of prescribed structures, a Commercial Activity Permit is required (fees apply).
  • If the filming or photography involves 11 or more people and the use of significant infrastructure or equipment, and/or exclusive use of a site, more intensive management may be required. This type of filming or photography is generally referred to as a ‘major production’ and may require a Commercial Activity Agreement (fees apply).

Please note, major production applications often involve a complex assessment process, it is recommended applications are submitted at least 3 months prior to the planned start date of filming.

Refer to the Operational policy- Commercial filming and photography in QPWS managed areas for more detailed information.

If the filming or photography involves 11 or more people and/or the use of prescribed structures, or is a major production, it is recommended you complete a pre-lodgement enquiry form and wait for initial advice from QPWS before lodging a Commercial Permit application. If a Commercial Activity Agreement is required, QPWS officers will provide further advice.
