This alert applies to the following parks:
- Thorsborne Trail, Hinchinbrook Island National ParkTropical North Queensland
- Hinchinbrook Island National ParkTropical North Queensland
Hiking the Thorsborne Trail is considerably challenging during the summer months between October to March.
Conditions are extremely hot and humid at this time of year, increasing the risk of heat-related injuries. Hikers can suffer heat exhaustion.
Freshwater sources often dry up in October-December. The wet season usually begins in December. When the wet season starts, high rainfall can cause creeks to rise rapidly and crossings to become dangerous. Extreme weather events are also more likely during the wet season.
QPWS strongly recommends careful consideration of choosing to undertake the Thorsborne Trail hike during the summer months.
The Thorsborne Trail is closed seasonally from the start of January to the end of February due to the high risk of unsafe conditions over this period.
