This alert applies to the following parks:
- K'gari, Great Sandy National ParkFraser Coast
- K'gari Great WalkFraser Coast
Due to the Higher-Risk Weather System typically experienced on K'gari during the warmer months, seasonal restrictions on forward bookings for the K'gari Great Walk are implemented annually from 1 November to 28 February. During this period, the likelihood of bushfires, heatwaves, flooding and tropical cyclones increases. Restricting forward bookings helps minimise the potential impacts on visitors should the walk, or sections of the walk, need to be closed at short notice due to changing weather conditions or other safety concerns.
Following an assessment of current conditions some sections of the K'gari Great Walk have been approved to remain open until 30 November 2026.
The following sections, hiker camps and feeder tracks remain closed under the seasonal closure arrangements:
- Hook Point to Central Station (southern section)
- Jabiru hiker's camp
- Boomanjin hiker's camp
- Benaroon hiker's camp
- Markwell's feeder track
- Wanggoolba feeder track
- Dundonga feeder track
- Winnum feeder track
QPWS Rangers will continue to monitor and assess conditions, with sections of the walk and associated camping areas progressively reopened when conditions permit.
The next review of the K'gari Great Walk's operating status will be undertaken by 26 November 2026.
Please observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and do not enter closed areas.
