This alert applies to the following park:

Native eel-tailed catfish are currently breeding in this area. During the breeding season, male catfish build large circular nests from gravel and pebbles on the lake bed and actively guard their eggs and young. While normally harmless, catfish may nip swimmers who come too close to a nest as part of their natural defensive behaviour. Visitors are encouraged to avoid disturbing visible nests and take care when swimming or wading in shallow water.

If bitten or injured by a catfish:

  1. Wash the wound thoroughly with clean water.
  2. Apply an antiseptic to help reduce the risk of infection.
  3. Monitor the injury for signs of infection, including increasing redness, swelling, warmth or discharge.
  4. Seek medical attention if the wound is deep, symptoms worsen, or a fin spine injury causes significant pain or swelling.
