Situated next to Mundawerra Waterhole on the Diamantina River, Hunters Gorge camping area offers incredible opportunities for fishing and birdwatching.

On the access track to Hunters Gorge look for the two impressive landmarks; Moses Cone rising from the river to the east, and Mount Mary forming the eastern side of the gorge.

As you settle in for the night have your camera ready to capture a spectacular sunset— the earth's red hues contrasting against the yellow weathered sandstone ranges.

Getting there and getting around

Hunters Gorge camping area is in Diamantina National Park, 306km south-west of Winton. The turn-off to the camping area is 10km north-west of the Ranger Base on Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road.

Travel 10km north-west on Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road and then right into the signposted Hunter Gorge track. The camping area is 3.5km down this road.

Before you visit

Opening hours

Hunters Gorge camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check in to your camp after 2pm and check out by 11am on the day of departure.

Camping area features

Two separate open bush camping areas by Mundawerra Waterhole on the Diamantina River. One area suitable for large groups, the other for individual camps. The camping area is well suited to camper trailers but has few shade trees and is exposed to frequent high winds.

Location: 3.5km from the turn-off to Hunters Gorge signed on Springvale Road.

Access: the camping area can only be reached by high clearance 4WD vehicle, and camper trailers and small 4WD high clearance caravans. Read 4WD with care for important information on 4WD safety and minimal impact driving.

Number of sites: two separate open camping areas without defined sites. One area suitable for large groups, the other for individual camps. Camp only in the existing clear areas at least 10m away from the riverbank.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your vehicle; roof top tent camping; swags; high clearance  camper trailers and small 4WD high clearance caravans.

Camp site surface: dirt.

Facilities: toilet (non-flush).

Open fires: permitted in the fire ring and barbecue rings provided, except when fire prohibitions or fire bans are in place, bring your own clean milled firewood. Portable fuel stoves are recommended.

Generators: not allowed, except for medical reasons (conditions apply).

Essentials to bring: all food and drinking water, sturdy rubbish bags, insect repellent, sun protection, first aid kit, reliable torch, toilet paper (not wet wipes!), vehicle spares and sufficient fuel. Read more about before you visit.
