Visiting White Blow safely

Getting there and getting around

Turn off the Flinders Highway at Mingela, 87km south-west of Townsville. At Mingela, travel south for 35km and turn left at the Ravenswood/Ayr Road, travel approximately 5km from the township of Ravenswood to reach the conservation park entrance.

Before your trip remember to:

• Check Queensland Traffic and Charters Tower Regional Council for current road conditions.
• Check Park alerts for Dalrymple National Park for the latest information on access, closures and conditions.
• Check Bureau of Meteorology for current weather and warnings.

During the wet season (December to April) access to the conservation park may be unavailable.

Wheelchair accessibility

White Blow Conservation Park has no wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Staying safe

• Keep to designated roads, and drive with caution as road conditions can change quickly. Watch out for animals, they can appear on roads at any time of day though are generally more active at dusk and dawn.
• Protect yourself from the sun. Wear sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved shirt, even on cloudy days.
• Stay with your vehicle if it breaks down. A vehicle is much easier to find than a person.
• Carry drinking water, whether driving or walking.
• Watch your step. Take care on the uneven surfaces on and around the quartz outcrop.
• Wear protective clothing. Put on a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and wear sturdy footwear, not thongs.
• Be aware of your surroundings at all times and be on the lookout for animals and insects that could scratch, sting or bite.
• Carry at least one form of communication equipment. Satellite phones and Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) are the most effective in this area. Mobile phone coverage is unreliable.

Before you visit

Essentials to bring

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable visit make sure you bring:

• a first aid kit
• fresh water, as water facilities are not provided
• a sealable container for rubbish—bins are not provided
• a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
• a shovel to bury all toilet waste.

Opening hours

White Blow Conservation Park is open 24 hours a day (camping is not permitted). The conservation park may be closed at times due to severe weather or management operations. Check park alerts for White Blow Conservation Park for the latest information on access, closures and conditions.

Permits and fees

Various activities in Queensland parks and forests require a permit. Activities include commercial tours, social events, organised group visits, school excursions, scientific research, professional photography and the sale of photographs or vision of the park. Pets

Domestic animals are not permitted in White Blow Conservation Park.

Climate and weather

Day time temperatures and humidity can be high at any time of the year, and nights can be very cool. Please carry suitable clothing to accommodate all extremes. July to October is generally the driest period and the best time to visit. In the wet season (December to April) local flooding may close roads to the conservation park. Weather forecasts are available from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Fuel and supplies

Fuel and basic supplies are available at Ravenswood, 5km south-west of the park. For a complete range of supplies, travel 88km northwest of the park to Charters Towers. For more information see the tourism information links.
