Climb through cool rainforest and along exposed ridgelines to a series of lookouts and vantage points with breathtaking views.
Islands—Brampton, St Bees, Keswick, Wedge and others—are scattered across the blue ocean, and a long sandy beach lines the shore beckoning to be explored. If you arrive at the beach when the tide is falling, you can walk across the causeway to Wedge Island.
Search the ocean for turtles at Diwaia lookout. They’re often seen feeding in the clear water below. Diwaia means flatback turtle in Yuwi language.
When it’s time to head home, return the way you came or wander back along the beach if the tide is low to shorten the walk to 2.8km (allow 1.5hrs walking time).
Getting there and getting around
The Andrews Point track is in Cape Hillsborough National Park, 50km north-west of Mackay, on the Central Queensland coast.
The track starts 300m along the beach, to the east of the boat ramp in the Cape Hillsborough day-use area.
- The day-use area is 2.3km from the park entrance, on Cape Hillsborough Road.
