Senior Ranger Scott introduces us to Cooloola Recreation Area.

Cooloola Recreation Area stretches from Rainbow Beach to Noosa North Shore, spanning 61,750 hectares. Whether driving along pristine stretches of sand, fishing along picturesque coastlines, canoeing down peaceful rivers, hiking through rainforests, or camping among blooming wildflowers, Cooloola has something for everyone.

‘I’ve been working in the southern end of the Great Sandy National Park in Cooloola since 2018 – what a place to work! Such a diverse area, it’s got so much to offer.’

Scott started his career by volunteering for Queensland Parks.

‘I was lucky enough to secure a full-time spot here at the Cooloola South Management Unit within the Great Sandy National Park,’ he said.

‘It looked like an amazing job, and I just love this part of the world.’

‘And here I am. Looking after this part of the world is such a privilege.’

Boasting over 20 different camping areas, you can see many of Cooloola’s unique environments. From wildflower heaths and tall forests to sweeping beaches and coloured sand cliffs, you’ll leave wanting to come back for more. For those ready for the challenge, embark on the Cooloola Great Walk, a 5-day 102km long trek through many of the region’s beautiful environments.

Other than its stunning natural features, the recreation area is also a crucial habitat for unique species such as shorebirds, ground parrots, Cooloola acid frogs and, believe it or not, even emus. Great Sandy National Park is one of the last remaining places with a coastal emu population in Queensland.

Meet Ranger Scott as he shares key considerations when visiting the Cooloola Recreation Area, part of the incredible Great Sandy National Park.

This part of the world is extremely popular and the vast majority of our visitors do the right thing, from planning carefully to being responsible while on park, driving to the road rules and conditions, and just being good camping neighbours.

‘Unfortunately, I’ve seen a few incidents where people have come to grief. We want people to have a good time, but don’t forget this is actually a pretty remote part of the world.’

QPWS Rangers work in conjunction with the Queensland Police Service, to ensure that all visitors to Cooloola Recreation Area are doing the right thing, keeping themselves and others safe. It’s also important to remember that Vehicle Access Permits (VAP) are required to traverse beach areas and select inland tracks. If entering a recreation area like Cooloola without a valid VAP, a penalty of $500 applies.
