River walk

Details: Spy a shy platypus along this easy and level track suitable for young families and people in wheelchairs (assistance may be required). Viewing platforms offer an opportunity to stop and look for the variety of life that lives in the flowing water of Broken River. The River walk links with the Broken River visitor area  and the Rainforest Discovery circuit and longer hikes.

Rainforest Discovery circuit

Grade 3

Distance: 780m circuit
Time: Allow 20–30min return

Details: From the Broken River visitor area or linking off the River walk, step into cool and shady rainforest. Cross bridges over trickling creeks and glance up to see tall trees decorated with epiphytes and vines. Stop at trackside signs to learn about the rainforest through the eyes of Eungella State School students.

Granite Bend circuit

Grade 3

Distance: 1.6km circuit return
Time: Allow 40–55min

Details: Linking off the Rainforest Discovery circuit pass through tall groves of livistona palms before taking a break at a bend in Broken River. Stay a while and listen to the water rushing over rocks.

Crediton Creek track

Grade 4

Distance: 8km one way
Time: Allow 3–4hr each way

Details: From the Broken River visitor area, walk along the Granite Bend circuit to reach the beginning of the Crediton Creek track. Follow the Crediton Creek track with the river at your side. Hike from rainforest gullies up to rocky ridges covered in drier vine forest (be prepared to scramble over the occasional log!), keep a watch out for rock-wallabies or red-legged pademelons. Where the track meets calm river sections, enjoy reflections in the water and watch for the ripples of a platypus.

For a shorter walk option, organise to be picked up at the Wishing Pool track access point (4)—alternatively, start your hike at the Wishing Pool circuit and walk back to the Broken River visitor area.

Wishing Pool circuit

Grade 4

Distance: 1.7km circuit
Time: Allow 35–50min return

Details: Walk through tall rainforest carpeted with delicate ferns, listen for whipbirds and fruit-doves calling from the forest. Stop by the calm river pool to see reflections of the forest canopy.

The walking track entrance is hard to spot! By car travel 3km along Eungella Dam Road then turn left into Crediton Loop Road. Continue another 3km until you reach a hair-pin bend, the track entrance point is located at this point and there is a small car park on the opposite side of the road. Enjoy this circuit walk or arrange to be dropped off/or picked-up at the track entrance as part of Crediton Creek track walk.

Getting there and getting around

Walks in the Broken River area of Eungella National Park are located approximately 80km west of Mackay along the Mackay-Eungella Road.

• The Broken River visitor area is located approximately 5.5km south of the Eungella township along the Eungella Dam Road.
• The Wishing Pool circuit track entrance is located approximately 6km southeast of the Broken River visitor area. Follow the Eungella Dam Road south for 3km, then turn east onto the Crediton Loop Road. Follow the loop road for approximately 3km to reach the Wishing Pool circuit track entrance.

The River walk and toilet facilities at the Broken River visitor area are wheelchair accessible (assistance may be required).

Opening hours

Walks in the Broken River area are open 24 hours a day. Access may be closed at times due to maintenance, park management activities or severe weather.
