One slip can change your life

Take extreme care around cascades and fast-flowing water at Finch Hatton Gorge. Tragically, people have died in accidents around the Finch Hatton Gorge area. Many more have been seriously injured―including spinal injuries. These incidents are specifically due to slipping on the wet slippery rocks and steep wet slopes and jumping into water holes.     Pine Grove circuit

    Grade 3

    Distance: 1.6km circuit
    Time: Allow 45min–1hr
    Map reference: (1)

    Details: Starting from the Pine Grove trailhead (located at the edge of Eungella township) gaze up through a canopy of hoop pines and enjoy a pleasant stroll through shady rainforest. Return to the car park via the roadside track. The walk passes by a resident camp of little red flying-fox—a sight to behold as they take to the sky on dusk!

    Cedar Grove track

    Grade 3

    Distance: 2.8km one way
    Time: Allow 1–1.5hr

    Details: Starting from either the Sky Window day-use area or looping off the Pine Grove circuit, stretch your legs and feel dwarfed by towering red cedars and tulip oaks as you cross bridges over peaceful creeks and brush by livistona palm fronds. Pause for a moment inside the strangler fig arch—a great photo opportunity!

    Bandala Yalga (Sky track)

    Distance: 250m circuit
    Time: Allow 5–10min

    Details: Take in the spectacular views of the rugged northern escapement and a panorama of Pioneer Valley as you learn about this ancient landscape.

    Clarke Range track

    Grade 4

    Distance: 8.2km one way
    Time: Allow 3–4hr one way
    Map reference: (2)-(3)

    Details: A moderate level of fitness required for this long hike with some short uphill sections and stairs. From Sky Window day-use area, follow the path down through layers of bright piccabeen and Alexandra palms, pass through lush rainforest and take a rest at viewpoints that offer glimpses of Pioneer Valley below. The track then traverses Clarke Range following rocky ridges and moist gullies to descend to Broken River’s tumbling cascades. After crossing the river, the track links up with the Granite Bend circuit and Rainforest Discovery circuit to reach the Broken River visitor area.

    Take extra care at Broken River crossing. Flowing water and slippery rocks can make crossing the creek dangerous at any time. Crossing the creek is weather dependent, with fast-flowing water restricting access after moderate to heavy rainfall. Never attempt to cross fast-flowing water.

    Getting there and getting around

    Walks in the Clarke Range area of Eungella National Park are located approximately 80km west of Mackay along the Mackay-Eungella Road near the outskirts of the Eungella township.

    • The Pine Grove trailhead is located approximately 100m along the Eungella Dam Road south of the Eungella township.
    • Sky Window day-use area is located approximately 2.5km along the Eungella Dam Road south of the Eungella township.

    Wheelchair access

    Wheelchair accessible (assistance may be required) picnic tables, BBQ’s, toilets and a short circuit walk are available at the Sky Window day-use area.

    Opening hours

    Walks in the Clarke Range area are open 24 hours a day. Access may be closed at times due to maintenance, park management activities or severe weather.
