Stroll around the rocky base of Mount Pollux. Admire the rock façades of Mount Pollux and Mount Castor, the two impressive volcanic plugs that form the Gemini Mountains. Stop along the way to appreciate the panoramic views of an almost-flat landscape punctured abruptly by numerous isolated pinnacles and plateaus.

Pack your binoculars and camera! Early mornings are the perfect time for walking and observing wildlife or snapping an image of the play of light on the geological features.
In dry weather, drive your 4WD vehicle 3.7km from the national park entrance gate, along the fenceline, to a small car park near the base of Mount Pollux. The grade 5 walking track leaves from the car park.
During and after wet weather, do not attempt to drive this 3.7km section of vehicle track. When wet, black soils became impassible, even for 4WD vehicles. Black soils contain a high proportion of expanding clays. When dry, they’re hard and cracked. When wet, water gets between the tiny clay particles and acts like a lubricant. Tyres struggle to grip because the soil shears apart rather than providing a firm surface.
Avoid a costly, vehicle-damaging recovery and don’t attempt to drive this track during and after wet weather. For those with conventional vehicles, park your vehicle at the entrance gate area and walk 3.7km along the fenceline to the start of the walking track.
For visitor safety, from 1 November to 2 April each year, this 4WD track is closed to vehicles. Access may also be closed at other times due to severe weather or park management activities.
