The Girraween Visitor Precinct is now open, with ample carparking, a new toilet block and an architecturally-designed visitor information building containing informative, interactive and thought-provoking displays.

Castle Rock (trailer sites) camping area

Castle Rock (trailer sites) camping area has semi-grassed and semi-shaded sites suitable for small caravans and motorhomes, and various-sized camper trailers. Sites are 12m x 9m in size.

You will be spoilt for choice at this large open camping area, as Castle Rock camping area has sites suitable for all visitors to Girraween National Park, including people with disabilities (PWD).

Sites cater for small caravans, motorhomes and various-sized camper-trailers. The two semi-grassed and shaded PWD sites are for use by those displaying a government issued disability parking permit. Linked to these campsites are PWD facilities with a toilet and shower cubicle (BYO portable shower and water).

Relax against the backdrop of views to The Pyramid and Castle Rock and let the forest symphony of birdsong help you to relax and unwind from a day on the road. Watch eastern grey kangaroos grazing on the grassed areas and listen to the abundant birdlife in the forest canopy. After relaxing under the shade of a eucalypt, it won't take you long to feel immersed in nature.

Getting there and getting around

Castle Rock camping area is in Girraween National Park, located on the Queensland–New South Wales border, 260km by road (approximately 3.5hrs) south-west of Brisbane. Helpful hint: screen shot the directions in the event mobile reception is lost.

Castle Rock camping area is situated 300m south of the Girraween visitor information building, on the southern side of Pyramids Road. There are two access roads (northern and western) to the centre, both accessible by conventional vehicles. Pyramids Road links the northern and western park entrances.

From Stanthorpe to western entrance (approx. 30–45min)

Continue 26km along the New England Highway to Wyberba (30km north of Tenterfield).
Turn onto Pyramids Road and follow this winding bitumen road through the Wyberba Valley 6km east to the western park entrance.
Drive about 3km on Pyramids Road to the camping area.

From Stanthorpe to northern entrance (approx. 40–50min)

Turn onto Sugarloaf Road, which turns into Eukey Road and drive about 15km via Storm King Dam towards Eukey.
About 1km before Eukey, turn onto Breens Road, drive 2.5km then turn onto Pyramids Road and drive about 6km to the northern park entrance.
Drive about 3km on Pyramids Road to the camping area.

Opening hours

Castle Rock camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check in to your camp after 2pm and check out by 11am on the day of departure.

Seasonal closures

Parts of Castle Rock camping area may be closed from time to time for regeneration.

Camping area features

Castle Rock camping area has semi-grassed and semi-shaded sites suitable for camper trailers, small caravans and motorhomes. When booking, you must choose either a camper trailer/caravan site, one of three larger trailer sites or one of the two dedicated People with disability (PWD) sites (conditions apply). Sites are not numbered and available on a first come basis.

Location: Castle Rock Creek camping area is situated 300m from the Girraween visitor information building, on the southern side of Pyramids Road.

Access: Castle Rock camping area can be reached by conventional vehicle. In some cases, it is not possible to park near your tent site.

Number of sites:

Camper trailer/caravan sites: Seventeen dedicated sites are available for small motor homes, campervans, caravans and camper trailers only. Tent sites are available adjacent to the trailer sites. Some sites allow full sun for greater solar power availability.
People with disabilities (PWD) sites: The two semi-grassed and shaded PWD sites are for use by those displaying a government issued Disability parking permit. Linked to these campsites are PWD facilities with a toilet and shower cubicle (BYO portable shower and water).

Camp site surface: hard decomposed granite soil, dirt, grass.

Facilities: shower cubicle (BYO shower and water), toilets, unfiltered water (unfiltered water (not suitable for drinking. Water used for purposes other than drinking should be boiled/treated before use) and communal picnic tables and wood barbecues. The Castle Rock camping area main amenities block has wheelchair access, and the PWD facilities have a toilet and shower cubicle (BYO portable shower and water). As rubbish bins are not provided you must take your rubbish with you when you leave. There are no powered sites.

Open fires:

Fires are permitted in Girraween’s camping areas. Castle Rock camping area has shared wood-fired barbecues and tent sites in Kambuwal camping area have access to fire rings.
Fires must not be left unattended.
Visitors are welcome to use their own portable fire stove ensuring it is enclosed and raised off the ground.
Visitors must bring their own clean firewood and kindling—all the wood within the park is protected and cannot be collected or used for fires. Check park alerts for local fire restrictions or bans.
Ground fires are not permitted including at camping areas, remote campsites, day-use areas, or rock escarpments.
All barbecue ashes need to be disposed of appropriately (wet down and taken to waste transfer station). Ash must not be dumped in the camping area or bush.

Generators: not permitted.

Essentials to bring: drinking water, rubbish bags (no bins are provided), insect repellent, fuel or gas stove in case of wet weather, warm clothing and warm bedding. Read more about before you visit.
