Camping area features: partially shaded camp sites in an open woodland setting.

Location: approximately 11km from the national park entrance via the Poison Valley Road access road.

Access: the camping area is accessible to 4WD vehicles driven with care. Poison Valley Road is unsealed and not suitable for caravans or motorhomes. During the wet season (usually November to April), and occasionally at other times, the road may be boggy and inaccessible.

Camp site surface: dirt.

Facilities: toilet (non-flush); fire rings provided at camp sites 1, 3, 4, 5, 8.

Open fires: camp fires are only permitted in the fire rings provided, except when  QFD fire bans and restrictions or QPWS-imposed fire prohibitions (PDF, 763.6KB) are in place. Bring clean firewood such as untreated, mill off-cuts, collecting firewood from the national park is prohibited. Fuel stoves are recommended.

Generators: not permitted.

Getting there and getting around

White Mountains National Park is approximately 80km east of Hughenden and 140km west of Charters Towers on the Flinders Highway. The road to Canns Camp Creek camping area is unsealed (dirt). To reach the camping area:

  • From the Burra Range lookout travel approximately 5km west on the Flinders Highway to the Flinders Shire Council truck and rest stop.
  • The signed entrance to the national park and access to Poison Valley Road (look for the Telstra tower) is located at the western end of the rest stop.
  • Follow Poison Valley Road for 11km to reach Canns Camp Creek camping area.

Wheelchair access

Wheelchair-accessible facilities are not available at Canns Camp Creek camping area.

Opening hours

Canns Camp Creek camping area is open all year round. Access maybe unavailable at times due to wet and boggy road conditions. The national park may be closed at times due to severe weather or management activities.
