A RANGER'S GUIDE to driving on sand | Teewah Beach to Double Island Point

Camping areas for schools and large groups

Certain groups may be able to request a special account—group account, school account or commercial operator account—for booking camping.

Other organised groups

If you are planning an organised use of a QPWS-managed area contact your local QPWS office to discuss your proposal.

  • Organised event permits may be required for weddings and large, organised group activities, such as school excursions or adventure training.
  • Maximum group sizes and other conditions may apply depending on the location you wish to use and the type of activity you are planning.
  • It is recommended that group leaders view the Teachers' and group leaders' package (PDF, 247.3KB) for planning hints and safety information.

Freshwater camping area: group areas

Features: Freshwater group camping offers large, developed areas to accommodate school and other organised, non-school groups, within the Freshwater camping area.

Location: 8km south of Double Island Point along Teewah Beach or approximately 40km north of 3rd cutting on the Noosa North Shore.

  • Freshwater education group site: One large site for a maximum of 40 people. This site is for school or education-based groups only and is not available during peak periods. Four car park spaces available.
  • Freshwater (group camping area): One large site for a maximum of 20 people. This site is for non-school and educational groups and is not available during peak periods. Five car park spaces available. Not suitable for camper trailers.

Access: The camping area can be accessed by 4WDs only via Freshwater Road from Rainbow Beach Road or Teewah Beach. Vehicle permits are required to access this camping area.

Suitable for: Tent camping

Surface: Sand

Facilities: Water (treat before use), flushing toilets, hot ($2 coins needed) and cold showers, rubbish bins and a pay phone. There is a 9pm noise curfew at this campground.

Open fires: Prohibited. Only cooking and heating appliances that meet the below requirements are permitted unless a Queensland Fire Department (QFD) total fire ban is in place.

  • The appliance must use gas or manufactured fuel (heat beads, briquettes). Manufactured fuel does not include timber or wood.
  • It must be used only for cooking and/or heating.
  • It must be a minimum of 20cm off the ground and more than 2m from flammable materials, which includes vegetation.
  • It must not have the potential to generate airborne embers, or possibly ignite nearby ground fuels.
  • It must be fully self-contained (heat source enclosed and no exposed flame) and never left unattended when in use.
  • Appliances that are not fully self-contained, such as braziers, are not permitted.
  • All appliances, materials and burnt fuel must be removed from the recreation area on your departure.

Approved cooking and heating appliances may vary from above list during QFD total fire bans. Check park alerts and QFD fire bans and restrictions for more details.

Generators: Prohibited

Essentials: Fuel or gas stove, rubbish bags, $2 coins for camping area hot showers (NB: $2 buys 4mins of hot water), first aid kit, insect repellent and sunscreen.

Mobile phone coverage: Not available. There is a pay phone opposite the amenities facility at the camping area.

Features: Harrys group camping offers two large, developed areas to accommodate school and other authorised larger groups, at the northern end of Harrys camping area. This peaceful camping area is set among fringes of open forest and woodland (melaleuca, allocasuarina, bloodwood and eucalypt species).

Location: On the western bank of the Upper Noosa River. Approximately 11.5km from Elanda Point via the Upper Noosa River, or approximately 34km from Boreen Point on mostly unsealed roads.

  • Harrys Education group site A: One large site for a maximum of 45 people.
  • Harrys Education group site B: One large site for a maximum of 20 people.

Access: The camping area can be reached by walking, 4WD vehicle, boat or canoe.  Vehicle permits are not required to access this camping area. High clearance 4WDs are recommended along Harrys Hut Road, as it is an unsealed sand track prone to flood damage.

Facilities: Untreated water in day-use area – water supply not guaranteed (treat before drinking), toilets (wheelchair access ramp available), picnic tables and picnic shelter in day-use area, jetty and canoe landing access points, park information.
